Located in the heart of Central Asia, Mongolia is a resource rich country with a fascinating history and a rapidly evolving economy. The Mongol Empire became the largest contiguous land empire in history, leaving a lasting cultural and linguistic legacy across the region. Today, Mongolian is spoken by around seven million people in Mongolia and parts of China, Russia and Central Asia.

Australia and Mongolia share growing ties through trade, investment, education and research. Since 2017, ANU students have had opportunities to undertake intensive study in Mongolia with support from initiatives such as the Australian Government’s New Colombo Plan.

As a relatively young democracy and a major exporter of natural resources, Mongolia faces complex social, economic and environmental challenges. Learning Mongolian at ANU can complement studies in history, anthropology, archaeology, geology, international relations, political science, environmental science, development studies, economics, linguistics, law and public health.

Overview

Mongolian language study at ANU is designed to be student-centred, flexible and supportive. ANU is the first Australian university to offer four fully online Mongolian language courses that can be completed as a minor. Learning materials are available online and include weekly vocabulary lists, audio and video resources, and cultural notes, providing a convenient and engaging way to learn the language.

Students begin with Modern Mongolian and the Cyrillic script. By the end of their first year, they can hold conversations about everyday life. They then progress to an intermediate level, developing the ability to use more complex sentence structures and idioms, as well as write short reports and essays. Throughout their studies, students also gain insights into Mongolian culture and traditions.

Study options

The Australian National University is the first university offering Mongolian language classes in the Southern Hemisphere and first online Mongolian language classes within a university program. Students work through conversation and written exercises each week, before meeting for a 90 minutes tutorial each week. In class, we review the week's material and explanation of the grammatical structure of words and sentences. Mongolian can be included in studies at the ANU in a variety of ways:

  • As a minor in a variety of degrees
  • As a language in a Diploma in Languages qualification
  • As an elective within a degree, or studied as an individual course

Undergraduate courses include Mongolian 1, Mongolian 2, Mongolian 3 and Mongolian 4.
