Modern Chinese, commonly known as Mandarin, is the official language of China, a country with one of the world’s oldest continuous written traditions and largest populations. Over thousands of years, Chinese language and culture have significantly influenced neighbouring countries, including Japan, Korea and Vietnam.
As China continues to play an important role in Asia and globally, learning Mandarin provides valuable insight into the country, its people and its international relationships. It also develops practical communication skills and supports more meaningful engagement across cultures.
Overview
Modern Chinese at ANU supports students at every stage, from beginner to advanced levels. Through structured, carefully tailored learning, students build confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing, while developing skills that can support translation and interpreting.
Classes are taught by an experienced team of professional language educators. Many have received College and University teaching awards and are actively involved in research on China and Chinese language education.
By the end of their studies, students will be equipped to read Chinese newspapers, understand television broadcasts and interviews, write essays in Chinese and communicate confidently with Mandarin speakers worldwide.
Study options
Modern Chinese language courses are primarily taught on campus, with online delivery available in exceptional circumstances. Students can choose from a major (48 units), a minor (24 units) or a Diploma of Languages in Chinese. Many combine Modern Chinese with another area of study, developing valuable language and cultural knowledge that can provide a competitive advantage in the job market.
Modern Chinese is also closely connected with Chinese Studies at ANU, giving students opportunities to explore their interests in the language while developing a deeper understanding of Chinese culture, history, society and thought.
Undergraduate courses include Modern Chinese 1: Spoken, Modern Chinese 2: Spoken, Modern Chinese 1: Written, Modern Chinese 2: Written, Modern Chinese 3, Modern Chinese 4, Modern Chinese 5 and Modern Chinese 6.
