What stories can a landscape hold?
Created by artist UK Frederick in collaboration with archaeologists, Rangers and Traditional Owners, Unseeded grew from field research led by ANU School of Culture, History & Language archaeologist Professor Sue O'Connor in the Ningbing Range of the Kimberley region.
The installation comprises 35 hand-crafted glass boab seedpods, each representing a site where evidence of past occupation was identified. Inspired by the boab trees that stand watch outside caves and rock shelters across the Kimberley, the work invites us to reflect on memory, movement and the stories carried through place.
Presented as part of Immersia 2026, Unseeded brings together art, archaeology and cultural knowledge to reveal the hidden histories embedded in the landscape. Like the archaeological search that inspired it, the showcase encourages us to look beyond what is immediately visible and discover new ways of understanding people, place and time.
